MEETING THE DREAM TEAM
Battle of the Year: The Dream Team, the 3D Hollywood film based on the Battle of the Year is being released early next year. Recently, the film-makers and actors gave a press conference about the film's progress and why they wanted to make a film about b-boys.
"The scene is amazingly pure and beautiful," says director Benson Lee, who produced the documentary Planet B-Boy. "It was my goal to capture the culture, but more importantly show an alternate side to hip hop because most people see hip hop through the eyes of MTV and the media which is very gangster, violent and materialistic."
Actor Josh Holloway (of Lost fame) admits he did some breaking back in the 80’s, and was optimistic about using his ‘skills’ in the movie: “When I took this project on, I thought maybe I could do some dancing. As soon as I saw these b-boys, I took that dream and put it back in my pocket! I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll just coach!’”
The decision to make Holloway coach was an important decision, says Lee. “Josh plays a coach, which you rarely see in this genre of film. I’m proud to say it worked – this film is a hybrid of sports and dance. It’s nice to see this film go in a different direction because there are a lot of movies in this genre.”
Of particular interest was how Lee blended in his actors’ real lives into the movie. Actors were allowed to use their real names and base their characters on themselves. The b-boys were also allowed to change their lines and make the script their own, to make the film as realistic as possible. Lee also ensured that the b-boys’ own signature moves were included in the choreography.
The movie will be unique, not only for being 3D, but because footage from the movie was shot during last year's Braun BOTY finals in Montpellier.
“It’s the real deal. We actually shot at BOTY. It was cool to work with a real dance culture, and capture an actual event with real people from around the world,” says Lee.
“On top of that we have real b-boys acting in this film — 99% of the actors are real b-boys and did a phenomenal job at acting too.”
The film follows an American dance crew who, with the help of their coach, struggle to reach their dreams despite being misunderstood by society and even their own families. Their lives collide in France where their skills are put to the ultimate test at the Battle of the Year finals, with crews from 18 nations vying for the Braun Battle of the Year title.
The film is due to be released on January 25th, 2013.
